Boat trip? Check. Beach time? Absolutely.

But somewhere between the sunscreen and your next meal, leave a little room for Plaza Amelia Wilkes.

This downtown square offers an easy change of pace: somewhere to sit, take a few photos, and discover a little of Cabo San Lucas beyond the waterfront. The official tourism guide highlights the plaza, its surrounding shops and restaurants, and the Museo de Historia Natural.

Gazebo and surrounding paths at Plaza Amelia Wilkes in Cabo San Lucas

Start With the Gazebo

Take a wander around the plaza, have a look at the gazebo, and find somewhere comfortable to sit.

You don’t need much of a plan here. A few photographs, a little people-watching, and a break from walking make a perfectly respectable stop.

If you’re exploring with friends, this is also a good place to settle the afternoon’s most important question: who’s hungry already?

Meet the Woman Behind the Name

The plaza honors María Amelia Wilkes Ceseña, a teacher and community leader who spent 42 years working in education.

She also became the first woman to serve as Cabo San Lucas’s government subdelegate, holding the position from 1966 to 1970. Her work included supporting education and improvements for the community. (Municipal biography)

Look for her statue during your walk. It gives the name on the map a story—and gives you something interesting to tell the person who stayed back at the hotel.

Add a Little Museum Time

The Museo de Historia Natural de Cabo San Lucas is at the plaza, in a building that previously housed the Artículo 123 Naciones Unidas primary school.

Its exhibits cover subjects including geology, paleontology, marine biodiversity, archaeology, and local history. The museum opened in October 2006. (Sistema de Información Cultural)

It’s an option if someone in your group is curious about the landscape, wildlife, or history behind the vacation scenery. Check current opening hours and admission before making it the centerpiece of your visit.

Watch for Art and Local Events

The plaza has hosted Viva la Plaza, a cultural program bringing together performances, food, art, and family activities. Cultura Los Cabos advertised a July 2026 edition featuring music, folkloric dance, and Mexican lotería.

Check the current Cultura Los Cabos calendar before going. If an event lines up with your trip, leave some extra time to browse and enjoy it.

A little room in your bag for something handmade wouldn’t hurt, either.

Make It an Easy Downtown Stop

Pair the plaza with a meal or some browsing in the surrounding streets. Choose one or two things you want to do and leave the rest flexible.

We’d suggest around 30–60 minutes for a casual plaza visit, with more time for the museum or an event. There’s no need to squeeze everything into one stop.

A few handy details:
