5 Things to Pack for a Baja Beach Day

The beach plan always sounds simple: grab your stuff, head toward the water, and find somewhere to relax.

Then someone forgets a towel. Someone else brought three snacks and absolutely no water. And the person who said “I don’t get cold” is suddenly interested in your extra layer.

A little preparation goes a long way. Here are five things to pack for a Baja beach day, without turning your bag into luggage for a two-week expedition.

1. Water and a Few Easy Snacks

Bring drinking water for everyone and snacks that travel well. Keep anything that needs refrigeration in a cooler with ice packs.

Even if lunch is part of the plan, having something handy saves you from cutting the afternoon short because someone has entered their hungry-and-unreasonable phase.

Leave room for a local food stop afterward. Our Rosarito getaway guide has a few ideas for combining beach time with seafood.

2. Sun Protection and Some Shade

Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat you won’t spend the entire afternoon chasing down the beach. If you’re bringing an umbrella or shade shelter, check whether it’s permitted and secure it according to its instructions.

A comfortable place to take a break makes it easier to enjoy the afternoon. Your beach setup doesn’t need to be elaborate—just give shade a place on the packing list.

3. A Beach Blanket and a Separate Towel

A beach blanket gives your group somewhere to sit, share snacks, and put down a book. Bring a separate towel for drying off so your sitting spot doesn’t immediately become the wet-towel zone.

Lay your blanket on dry sand away from the water’s reach, and keep paths and beach access points clear.

4. A Light Layer and Dry Clothes

A sweatshirt or light jacket earns its space when you decide to stay longer than expected. If swimming or a surf lesson is on the agenda, add dry clothes and a bag for wet items.

Even a beach day spent entirely on land can turn into dinner afterward. Having something comfortable to change into keeps that option open.

5. One Bag That Keeps Everything Together

Choose a tote or backpack that fits your essentials and is comfortable to carry. Keep your phone and keys in a closed pouch, separate from wet towels and anything that might leak.

Tuck in a small rubbish bag, too. Before leaving, check your spot for wrappers, bottle caps, and anything else your group brought along.

The goal is to leave with your belongings—and without half the beach inside your bag.

Pick Your Spot, Then Keep It Simple

Before heading out, check the weather, beach access, and local notices. Follow posted signs and lifeguard instructions; a beach visit doesn’t have to include swimming to be a good afternoon.
